What Are Brake Rotors? A Plain-English Guide for Australian Drivers

Brake rotors are the metal discs attached to your wheel hubs that spin with the wheels and give the brake pads a surface to clamp onto. When you press the brake pedal, the pads squeeze the rotor, and that friction is what slows the car down and stops it.

What does a brake rotor do?

Every time you brake, your car has to turn movement into heat. The rotor is the part that does the heavy lifting. It acts as a heat sink. It absorbs the heat the pads create and then sheds it into the air as you keep driving.

That is why the design of the rotor matters. If a rotor cannot get rid of heat fast enough, braking performance drops off. There are two basic builds you will see:

Solid rotors are made from a single piece of metal. You will usually find these on the rear wheels of smaller or lighter cars, where the braking loads are lower.

Vented rotors have cooling vanes cast between two rotor faces, so air can flow through the middle of the disc and pull heat out much faster. These are used on the front wheels of most cars, because the front brakes do the majority of the work.

 

Is a brake rotor the same as a brake disc?

Yes. A brake rotor and a brake disc are the same thing. In Australia most people say disc, in the US they tend to say rotor. If you see either word on our site or anywhere else, they mean the same part.

 

The types of brake rotors we make

This is where a lot of guides online get vague, so here is exactly what we make in our VMAX rotor range and where each one fits.

Plain. A plain disc is a straight OEM replacement. No slots, no holes. It does the job for standard driving.

S type (straight slot). This is our entry level slotted disc. It still gives you a performance benefit over a plain disc, just not as much as the R or J type.

R type (curved slot). This is our most popular disc. It has more slotting across the face, which gives better braking efficiency than the S type. For most drivers who want an upgrade, this is the one.

J type (J hook). This is built for more track focused drivers. The J type gives the best balance between surface area and slotting. You want this balance when you are running a much more aggressive brake pad than a normal road pad.

Dimpled and slotted. This one is honest and worth saying out loud. Dimpled and slotted is chosen purely for looks. If someone is selling it to you as a big performance jump, that is not the case.

Signs your rotors need replacing

You do not need to guess. The main signs your discs are worn are:

  • Vibration or shudder through the steering wheel or pedal
  • Scoring or glazing on the disc face
  • The disc has reached minimum thickness
  • Increased noise when braking

How to choose the right rotor for your car

The right disc comes down to how you drive.

Daily driving. You can run plain discs as a minimum. Most of our customers step up to an S or R type anyway, because the price difference is small and you get better braking and a better looking disc on the car.

Performance driving. We suggest an R type or J type disc paired with an upgrade pad. The disc and the pad have to work together, so the pad choice matters as much as the disc.

Towing. We recommend the same setup as performance driving. The extra weight of towing puts the same kind of load through your brakes that hard driving does, so your braking system is working just as hard. That extra heat is also what leads to brake fade, so the right disc and pad matter even more here.

How long do brake rotors last?

Can you replace rotors without replacing pads?

You can, but it is always best practice to put new pads on new discs. Doing it together gives you a much better bed in.

Do I need slotted rotors for normal driving?

No, you do not need slotted discs for normal driving. The benefit of a slotted disc is better braking efficiency, and most customers choose to upgrade because it does not cost much more to do.

What causes brake rotors to warp?

Brake discs generally do not warp on their own. The main cause we see is uneven pad material transfer, where pad deposits build up unevenly on the disc face and create that warped feeling.
